FAFSA application

In order to receive student financial aid, students are required to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every school year.  We encourage students to complete the FAFSA online.  Paper forms are available at all NLU campuses.

First Time Applicants:

  • National-Louis University school code is 001733; we are only listed with our Chicago IL campus address.  Please choose this option regardless of which campus you will be attending.
  • A PIN (personal identification number) is required to submit the FAFSA application; to request one, go to www.pin.ed.gov.  If you prefer to sign by paper, a PIN will still be sent to you for future convenience once your application is processed.  The same PIN can then be used to access and sign your Renewal FAFSA application next school year.
  • If you are a dependent student, your parent will also have to sign.  Only one parent needs to sign the application.  Your parent(s) may apply for a PIN at the PIN site in order to electronically sign your application, or they can sign a paper signature page.  Parents can use the same PIN to sign the application of multiple children from one year to the next.
Returning FAFSA Applicants:

  • National-Louis University school code is 001733; we are only listed with our Chicago IL campus address.  Please choose this option regardless of which campus you will be attending.
  • You will need a PIN to sign the application electronically.  If you have forgotten your PIN, you can request a duplicate by going to www.pin.ed.gov and selecting the option "Request a Duplicate PIN".  From the PIN web site, you can ask to have your PIN sent to you by e-mail or U.S. postal mail.  You will receive your duplicate PIN in 4 hours by e-mail or in 7-10 days by postal mail.
  • Remember, your PIN gives you access to your personal information on the Web and also allows you to sign student aid documents electronically.  To protect the confidentiality of your application data, you should never share your PIN with anyone, even if that person is helping you to complete your Renewal FAFSA on the Web.

Many students are finished with the application process once the FAFSA is submitted.  The Department of Education (DOE) selects approximately one third of all applicants for a process called verification and occasionally flags a student for review of name, citizenship or income.  The results we receive from DOE will let us know if you are required to submit any supplemental information or documentation.  We will send you a detailed letter explaining any additional requirements.  You will work directly with our staff, not the DOE, to supply the required documents and resolve any outstanding issues.

Please keep in mind that it may take up to 2 weeks for our office to receive your electronic results from the Department of Education.  To ensure that financial aid is processed in a timely manner, NLU requires that FAFSA results are received at least 30 days before the term starting date.  Late applicants are required to make monthly payments of $300 while financial aid is being processed.

If you need assistance completing the FAFSA or have any other questions/concerns, please call us at 800.443.5522, ext. 5350.  We look forward to serving you.
