Merit-Based Donor Scholarships - Accepting Applications

Deadline: MAY 11, 2010

National-Louis University is pleased to invite our current students who will be returning for the 2010-2011 academic year to apply for the NLU 2010-2011 Merit-Based Donor Scholarships. These scholarships are funded by donors who wish to reward the academic excellence of NLU students. General information about the Merit-Based Scholarships is available here: Frequently Asked Questions. The application and directions are also available on our website.

This year’s scholarship opportunities and specific eligibility requirements are listed in the Merit-Based Scholarship List. Additionally, there are eligibility requirements that apply to all scholarships. To be eligible to receive a Merit-Based Donor Scholarship a student must:

  • demonstrate evidence of academic achievement
  • have completed at least one term at NLU prior to May 31, 2010.

To apply for a Merit-Based Scholarship you must complete the entire application process. There are 3 components that must be submitted to successfully apply for a Merit-Based Donor Scholarship:

  • the application which is completed online,
  • a personal essay, and
  • a letter of recommendation from an NLU faculty member.

Detailed instructions on the how to complete each step of the application process are included with the application on our website. The actual application is completed online and then your Merit-Based Recognition Scholarship essay and your letter of recommendation are submitted separately. Incomplete submissions will not be accepted. Valid scholarship submissions can be submitted in several ways (listed below), but must be received by midnight, Tuesday, May 11, 2010. Only applications received by the deadline will be considered.

Personal Essay: Your essay is your only interaction with the Faculty Selection Committee. Remember the purpose is to share why you are deserving of the scholarship. In general, an effective essay tends to be 1-3 pages in length. It is very important that you put some time and effort into writing your essay.

Your essay should address the following:

  • What brought you to your current course of academic study
  • Your specific goals for your study and/or your future goals and aspirations
  • How you meet the eligibility criteria of the scholarship(s) for which you are applying

Typographical, grammatical and editorial quality of essays are weighed as a reflection, in part, of your ability to communicate. You may seek assistance and have your essay reviewed, at no charge, by the university's Center for Academic Development. Feel free to contact the center's director, Jadwiga Piper (jpiper@nl.edu), 312.261.3300; the center's e-mailbox, cybercad@nl.edu; or visit the center's website at www.nl.edu/cad.

Letter of Recommendation from an NLU Faculty member: It takes a significant amount of time to write a recommendation letter. When you ask a Faculty member to write your letter, make sure you give them enough time to complete it. The Faculty are excited to help you, so don't be afraid to ask. You need to be responsible and contact them consistently and in a timely fashion. The letter must be sealed in an envelope and marked "confidential" with the faculty member's signature on the outside OR your professor can e-mail the letter directly to stscholarships@nl.edu.  You cannot submit the letter yourself via e-mail.

Once you have these two items (electronically or on paper), you need to submit them to the Scholarship Coordinator. Incomplete packets will not be accepted. Your scholarship packet can be submitted in several ways (listed below), but must be received by midnight, Tuesday, May 11, 2010. Only applications received by the deadline will be considered.

You can submit your essay and letter of recommendation:

  • By e-mail: stscholarships@nl.edu (preferred and most secure)
  • In person: to the Office of Student Finance at any campus
  • By mail (must be received by May 11, 2010):
