Subsequent Certification
Introduction
The team of faculty and staff that developed the NCE Subsequent Certification program believes this innovative program to be rigorous and reflective and one that will benefit the students of Illinois. Patricia Anderson, Pennie Olson, Donna Wakefield, Connie Kieffer, Jerry Ligon, Rose-Lynn Jaffe and Karen Haworth developed this unique program. Rather than “rubber stamping” a transcript review sheet, the NCE Subsequent Certification Program involves candidates who already have an Illinois Teacher Certificate in a Portfolio Development course that has candidates reflecting on their teaching career and why they want to seek new certification; analyzing their past academic and professional knowledge and experience in view of state standards. Based on this reflection and analysis and in conjunction with a review of their portfolio by a faculty team, a professional development plan to fill in gaps and prepare them for an appropriate clinical placement is developed. The faculty team will ensure that all program, college, and state standards are met before the candidate is recommended for entitlement for the subsequent certification.

Admission Requirements
Candidates must meet the same admission requirements as those established for NCE’s MAT programs and must hold current Illinois initial or standard certification. All applicants who were certified prior to July 1, 1988 must pass the Illinois Test of Basic Skills prior to admission.  Applicants will indicate the area of subsequent certification by checking the appropriate box under the “Sub-sequent Certification” section of the application for admission. Successful candidates will be admitted as non-degree seeking students.

Program Hours
The total hours required for each candidate depends upon his/her background and experience documented in the electronic portfolio. This program of study is drawn from regularly scheduled courses presented by that department or related departments. Each candidate must pass the Illinois Content Area test and have this score on file with the Clinical Placement Office prior to registering for the Subsequent Certification Practicum course in the area of subsequent certification. At the conclusion of the practicum and after the candidate has passed the appropriate Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT) test, candidates will be recommended to the Illinois State Board of Education for certification in in the area of program focus. The Subsequent Certificate Program confers no degree.
