Mission Statement

The Reading and Language Department shares a vision of literacy education that informs our mission at National Louis University and recognizes that literacy is always at the forefront of policies and debates in education. We view literacy as a complex process that necessitates multiple perspectives and instructional approaches. Consequently, we believe literacy instruction should be designed to consider the needs of a variety of students in multiple situations using literacy for different purposes. Faculty within the department maintain active roles within the institution, the state, and the nation as scholars, leaders, and educators. Graduates of our programs value collaboration and partnerships with their peers, parents, and communities to promote the literacy development of increasingly diverse learners and are prepared to be leaders who design, facilitate, and promote excellence in literacy education, in scholarship, in professional activities, and in public policy.
