As an advisee, you have clear responsibilities in the advising partnership in order to be successful:
- Be an active learner by:

- Clarifying your personal values and goals and providing your academic advisor with accurate information regarding your interests and abilities.
- Taking assessment tests (math and writing) early in your NLU career.
- Understanding areas where you may need extra assistance to be a successful student and seek help.
- Ask questions of academic advisors and other NLU faculty and staff when you are unsure about something or have a specific concern.
- Schedule regular appointments or make regular contacts with your academic advisor each term. Come to your advising meetings prepared by:

- Bringing a copy of your of your credit evaluation or program checklist to every meeting.
- Keeping an organized advising portfolio with all advising materials that you’ve been given kept in one place.
- Coming to a meeting for course scheduling with an idea of what classes you’d like to take.
- Showing up on time or canceling or changing your appointment in advance.
- Bringing a list of questions that you have for your advisor with you to your meeting.
- Having course descriptions of any courses that you wish to take at another institution to transfer to NLU with you at your meeting.
- Take responsibility for your NLU education by:

- Knowing your NLU username and password and checking your NLU e-mail account regularly.
- Understanding important deadline dates for quarterly registration.
- Enrolling in courses that you need and completing them.
- Becoming knowledgeable of university policies and procedures and using the Student Handbook in hard copy or online as a reference for questions.
- Understanding the specific requirements that your academic program may have beyond course requirements.
