Elementary Education Degree
Elementary Education Degree at National-Louis University

At National-Louis University, our Bachelor of Arts students in Elementary Education are admitted to National College of Education during their senior year as part of a campus-based cohort group. Term I for a elementary education degree includes two campus-based methods classes and two full days per week of school-based Practicum II experiences. Term II includes two additional campus-based methods classes and a continuation of the school-based Practicum III experience in the same classroom. Term III is a full-time student teaching experience in a different school at a different grade level.

This model provides the following advantages:

  • Increased opportunities for direct links between methods coursework and classroom experiences
  • Extended field experiences which provide preservice students greater opportunities to learn developmentally appropriate practices to meet the emotional, physical, social, and academic needs of students
  • Sustained mentored introductions to the complex roles and responsibilities of the classroom teacher
The pre-student teaching Practicum II/III experiences are continuous in one classroom on Tuesday and Wednesday throughout both Term I and Term II. This extended contact between the practicum student, children, cooperating teacher, parents, school administrators, and university supervisor allows strong relationships to develop and maximizes the growth and development of the practicum student paramount for a elementary education degree. The field experiences are also supported by weekly on-campus seminars taught be elementary education faculty. These experiences complement the full-time student teaching experience. Working in partnership strengthens both field experiences enabling all to benefit from shared visions of teaching, learning, and professional development within our common professional community.

This elementary education degree program is approved by the Illinois State Board of Education for kindergarten through 9th grade (middle school/junior high school).
