The Federal Work-Study (FWS) provides part-time employment for undergraduate and graduate students allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages the student employment position to be related to the students course of study.
To receive federal student aid, you must meet certain requirements:
- Students must apply for financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year of attendance. The application can be completed at www.fafsa.gov. The federal school code for NLU is 001733.
- Students must have a completed financial aid file including compliance with all needed documentation and verification process;
- Students must have documented financial need. Financial need is defined as the Cost of Attendance (COA) minus the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). (COA is the amount it will cost the student to go to school. EFC is the amount you and/or your family are expected to contribute to your education. EFC is determined from information submitted by you on the FAFSA and reported to you on the Student Aid Report, SAR);
- Students must be enrolled at least half-time (6 credits per semester) or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis;
- Students must be admitted to a degree seeking program;
- Students must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its territories;
- Students must be in good academic standing and make satisfactory progress to maintain eligibility. Please visit our website at Satisfactory Academic Progress (link in pdf format) for complete information regarding Standards of Academic Progress;
- Students must not owe a refund on a federal grant or be in default on a federal student loan.. Click on the following link for default information http://www.collegezone.com/10_3403.htm.
- Be registered with Selective Service if you are male and 18 to 25 years of age (go to www.sss.gov for more information).
- Have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) Certificate or pass an exam approved by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Not have a drug conviction for an offense that occurred while you were receiving federal student aid (such as grants, loans, or work-study).
- Received a Financial Aid Package from the Student Finance Office with Federal Work-Study eligibility.
NOTE: Per Section 224, 227 and 401.5 of the Illinois Unemployment insurance guidelines (link in pdf format), any student employment positions that are paid and classified as student employment, such as Federal Work-Study, College Employment and Graduate Assistant, etc. are not eligible to request unemployment compensation once the position has ended. Any questions should be directed to the Student Finance Office.
