Psychology (M.A.)
Program Description:
Understanding how relationships develop, how individuals behave and knowing why we do what we do are increasingly valuable skills in today’s complex society. This type of knowledge helps organizations be more productive and helps all of us lead more fulfilling personal and professional lives.
The NLU graduate program in Psychology is designed for those of you who are interested in teaching at the community college or four-year college level—as well as those of you who are interested in working in developmental, cultural, organizational and health psychology at a for-profit or not-for-profit organization. The program is recognized by the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) as the leader in the number of degrees awarded in the state.
Your coursework will include advanced study in the areas of human development, personality, abnormal psychology, cognitive and/or social psychology, assessment, and research methods, design and analysis. The knowledge, skills and competencies developed in the master’s program will also give you a solid foundation for later doctoral study.
In addition, you can earn a Certificate of Advanced Study in Human Development; Psychological Assessment; Organizational Psychology or Health Psychology.
How You Will Learn:
The NLU graduate program in Psychology is taught using a cohort model, which means you will go through the program with the same group of 12-20 students. NLU graduates like the cohort model because of the support and friendships provided by their fellow students throughout the program.
What You Will Learn:
- How a broad-based knowledge of psychology can be used in community and workplace settings.
- How to assess and select appropriate psychological measures.
- How to apply psychology theories to personal, social and professional situations.
- How to recognize and understand ethical limits in consent, confidentiality, privilege and malpractice.
- How to develop critical research design and written communication skills.
Where You Can Take the Program:
At NLU campuses in Chicago, Elgin, Lisle and Skokie (North Shore).
