Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
RE: Performance Review for Tenured Faculty

On January 17, 2001, the Faculty Senate approved FP103b Performance Review Policy for Tenured Faculty, which describes the process for a three-year cycle of review for tenured faculty. The Performance Review process has been designed to provide formative evaluation and support faculty in continued professional development and/or in the promotion process. Your participation in the process is valued as we move National-Louis University forward.

This letter is intended to summarize the process and explain your position in the Performance Review cycle. A copy of the entire policy is contained in your Faculty Guidebook.

Yearly Plan and Self-Review for All Faculty

The policy specifies that all tenured faculty members will set:

  1. a three year plan with specific annual goals and benchmarks and submit this plan to their primary evaluator by December 1 of each year. The plan should address the following areas: Quality of Instruction, Service Within the Institution, Service to Profession and Community and Professional Growth and Development

  2. a self-review and assessment of performance based on the previously defined goals and benchmarks by June 30 of each year. The plan may be revised at this point. If the faculty member is unable to accomplish a particular goal, this should be noted.

Please note that your three-year plan is due to your college dean on December 1, 2002 and your self-review and assessment on June 30, 2003. They will inform you of the procedures and format that they will use.

Performance Review Every Three Years

In addition, the policy requires that, every three years, tenured faculty members will participate in Performance Review.

Performance Review means that the faculty member will prepare a narrative for submission to the dean or designee by June 30th of the review year. This document substitutes for the yearly self-review and assessment in that year. The narrative will be brief, demonstrating the attainment of goals. Goals not accomplished should be noted. Limited documentation such as load forms, student evaluations, and letters of support may be included.

The dean or designee will schedule a meeting to discuss this review before December 31st.

The purpose of this discussion is growth and development. The primary evaluator may provide suggestions, ideas, and resources to enhance the faculty member's performance and achievement of goals. The ultimate objective is to assist the faculty member in the enhancement of individual performance and /or in the promotion process.

To summarize the performance review schedule:

    • Faculty members in the "2002" calendar year category should have submitted a narrative to their primary evaluators last June 30, 2002 and will be scheduled for a performance review meeting by December 31, 2002.

    • Similarly, faculty members in the "2003" calendar year category will submit narratives by June 30, 2003, and meet with their primary evaluators by December 31, 2003.

    • Faculty members in the "2004" calendar year category will submit narratives by June 30, 2004, and meet with their primary evaluators by December 31, 2004.

Please make note of these deadlines.

        Newly Tenured Faculty

According to the policy, when a faculty member is granted tenure, the following academic year will be used for developmental purposes. The year after the granting of tenure, the faculty member will be expected to develop goals and objectives with the appropriate administrator. The framework for these goals and objectives will comprise the same categories used for the granting of tenure. The four categories are Quality of Instruction, Service Within the Institution, Service to Profession and Community and Professional Growth and Development

The second academic year after the granting of tenure, the tenured faculty member will begin Year 1 (One) of a three-year cycle. Therefore:

        1. Faculty tenured in 2001 will develop their first three-year plan in 2002 and be scheduled for their first performance review in 2005.

        2. Faculty tenured in 2002 will develop their first three-year plan in 2003 and be scheduled for their first performance review in 2006.

If you have any questions about the deadlines or requirements of the performance review policy and process, please contact your dean or director. You may also call Vice Provost Carol Melnick (3683) or her administrative assistant Tina Turnbull (5234).
